The Rehabilitation

In 1997, the condition of the Enguri hydropower plant was studied and analyzed in order to determine the scale and priorities for the necessary rehabilitation works. In 1998-1999 a large-scale project for the rehabilitation of the Enguri HPP was developed.

According to the plan, the rehabilitation work of the Enguri Dam and emergency operations of the pressure tunnel were carried out during a 3-month shutdown of Enguri HPP.  Moreover, as part of the project, rehabilitation of all units (№1, №2, №3, №4 და №5) was done, consequently, the capacity of Enguri HPP reached its designed capacitance- 1300 MW.

At the initial stage of the Enguri HPP rehabilitation, a new shield of the Enguri Dam was designed and installed. At the same time, rehabilitation works of electro-mechanical and hydro-mechanical equipment were carried out at Vardnilhesi I. Besides, Vardnili Dam, waterway constructions and main culvert were constructed or rehabilitated.

For 2018-2022 fourth phase of rehabilitation is planned in order to ensure reliable and proper operation of Enguri HPP. Within the framework of this initiative are planned the construction, rehabilitation, monitoring, hydro-mechanical, and electro-mechanical works.
