According to Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Natia Turnava, after the rehabilitation of Enguri HPP at least 100 million kWh will be added to the country’s current electricity generation. Turnava said this to journalists after inspecting the rehabilitation works on the Enguri HPP diversion tunnel.
She also noted that Enguri HPP is the country’s largest source of hydropower, supplying a large share of Georgia’s electricity market — roughly 40–50 per cent.
According to the minister, the rehabilitation works being carried out around the clock in the 15-kilometre tunnel will reduce water seepage (over time cracks appear in the tunnel and water is lost), as a result of which at least 100 million kWh will be added to the plant’s current generation.
