Enguri HPP shuts down in two days — how will Vardnili HPP keep working?

“Enguri HPP was to have been shut down in February. But so as not to lose a high-water month, we brought the date forward, and under the plan the rehabilitation of the diversion tunnel will take place from 20 January to 1 May inclusive,” says Levan Mebonia, chairman of the Board of Directors of Enguri HPP LLC.

“As for Vardnili HPP, it will continue to operate, but at reduced capacity. During the rehabilitation, water can be diverted into Vardnili HPP from the old bed of the river Enguri. Its maximum capacity is 100 cubic metres, which corresponds to about 45 megawatts. That is almost four and a half times less than full capacity, but in February and March there will not be that much water either. We expect Vardnili HPP to operate at around 15–20 megawatts, and in April to be loaded at 40–45 megawatts,” noted Levan Mebonia.
